General Foundational Skills – Ladders A and B

The General Foundational Skills Band develops the essential mathematical knowledge, language, representations, and relationships upon which later learning depends. It begins with learners’ understanding of quantity, sameness and difference, classification, comparison, patterns, shapes, position, and counting, and gradually develops more secure number sense, numeral recognition, number relationships, ordering, and place-value understanding.

Across Ladders A and B, learners move from concrete experiences with objects, actions, pictures, and oral mathematical language toward increasingly meaningful use of numerals, symbols, number lines, and other representations. Particular emphasis is placed on connecting quantities with number words and symbols, understanding mathematical vocabulary, describing relationships, and communicating simple mathematical ideas. This band establishes the conceptual and linguistic foundation learners need before progressing to formal operations and more complex mathematical reasoning.
