Intermediate and Critical Skills – Ladders C and D

The Intermediate and Critical Skills Band develops the mathematical competencies that serve as the principal bridge between foundational number sense and more advanced mathematics. It strengthens learners’ understanding of the four basic operations and progressively develops multiplicative thinking, fraction concepts, measurement, geometric measurement, data interpretation, early probability, and multistep problem-solving.

Across Ladders C and D, learners move beyond performing procedures to understanding the relationships represented by mathematical operations. They learn to select appropriate strategies, interpret mathematical situations, recognize known and unknown quantities, explain their reasoning, and represent ideas through objects, models, diagrams, number sentences, tables, graphs, and symbols. Learners also make the important transition from additive reasoning toward multiplicative and fractional thinking. These competencies are considered critical because unresolved difficulties at this stage can significantly limit later success in proportional reasoning, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and mathematical modeling.
